Once Mandatory and Versatile

There were different shapes depending on the region. For example, there was the angular Bavarian cheekpiece or the round German bench rest. The roll-over cheekpiece and the Monte Carlo stock came from the United States. On the one hand, the cheekpiece served as a stylistic element and gave the stock a good appearance. However, the cheekpiece did have an important function when firing. It enlarges the stock toward the shooter's side of the rifle. It allows the head to rest against the stock. This provides more stability for the shooter. For a left-handed shooter, it must, of course, be on the opposite side of the stock. This is one of the reasons why inexpensive rifles no longer have cheekpieces.

Cheekless stock is versatile, but also has disadvantages

The cheekless stock can be used by both left- and right-handed shooters. This saves on production costs. Higher mold costs are incurred, especially with plastic stocks. Another reason is that almost every rifle today is equipped with a telescopic sight. This leads to a change in the shooting position. This depends on the mounting, which depends on the objective diameter of the scope. To fully utilize the field of view, the shooter must look through the scope. Today's scopes have an objective diameter of approximately 50 millimeters or more. As a result, the head no longer rests on the stock; it practically "floats" above and beside it. Therefore, a cheekpiece itself is of little use. Nevertheless, this position is not necessarily suitable for the shooter. It strains the neck muscles and is uncomfortable.

Cheekpieces and cheekpiece risers are important additions

The cheekpiece with cheekpiece riser was developed for these conditions and can now be purchased separately. It offers versatile and fine adjustments, ensuring that the head always rests precisely on the rifle's head. The cheekpiece riser allows for precise aiming at the target. Today's cheekpieces and risers are skin-friendly and enhance the rifle's appearance. At the same time, they usually offer adjustment range in height and width.
